  • mystery insect in my house - NHM said to post it if found

    hi,

I have a top floor flat in a London square and have just seen on the NHM website that these insects, which I keep finding near enough every day in my house, are probably from the trees in there.  The NHM said to post if these insects are spotted as they are a mystery.

Has the Museum carried out yet tests on the bug's  body shape, form and DNA to see whether it is a newly discovered  species or if it is in fact Arocatus roeselii?

Here's a link that NHM posted in 2008 and so hopefully they now know more what it is.

Please help as I want to know if they bite/what puts them off entering the flat.

    Thanks!

  • Losing battle with unknown bug! Please help ID?

I've been battling an unknown bug now for 6 weeks (from mid December). I am disposing of around 5 a day from my bathroom and the adjoining room. I live in a downstairs flat in South Tyneside. I can't see where they are coming from but presume its either from behind the bath panel or wall cavities/skirting boards. I have so far used a full tin of expanding foam and I am on my second tube of silicon in a bid to seal every possible place they are coming from, but every day they still appear!

The picture with the edge of the toothpaste tube in shows scale (the black section of the toothpaste tube is 4mm). They seem to move very slowly when watched but will appear out of nowhere when I check for them. I think they have wings as I could have sworn one tried to fly when I went to remove it. I am presuming they are a beetle but really I have no idea?

    Hi,

My wife just found this in our bedroom, in a roof extension, under a box. What is it? And should I be worried. It has legs at the front and is moving!

    Many Thanks.

  • Help finding identification guides / learning materials

    Hello everyone,

I have recently come back from an amazing trip to Borneo and had a great time photographing almost every bug I saw. I would very much like to take my casual interest in bugs further and start to identify some of them. Could anyone please recommend any books or other learning resources that they think will help? I will post some photos on here at some point in the future but would really like to have a go at identifying some of them myself first.

Also, if anyone can recommend any entomology or general nature home study courses it would be greatly appreciated.

    Many thanks for your time.

    Mike.

  • Unknown Brown legless bug about 10mm long

    Hi,

I am trying to get an identification for a small bug that is about 10 mm long and moves like a caterpiller but has little claws no legs.

  • Another collembolan?

I have recently been looking for invertebrates under fallen sycamore bark and have been seeing some small blue-tinged creatures which would appear to be collembolans. After checking with Steve Hopkin’s Gallery, Lepidocyrtus curvicollis (Entomobryinae) or L. cyaneus would seem a reasonable fit. However, I have had more than usual difficulty in generating images clear enough for comparison. Today it occurred to me that the problem may partly be a result of individuals that I am looking at having some form of coating round them (a protective mucilage perhaps?). The attachment, hopefully, makes the point. and I should be grateful for comment.

...potential problem they can be. Many dogs are inquisitive and love to wander away from their owners. If you`re with your dog and watching it carefully then a quick corrective shout or whistle will probably be enough to bring the dog bounding back towards you. However not everybody can watch their pet all the time. Many people choose to erect large fences and gates, tall enough to keep their beloved dog safe within the boundaries of their property, but for some this is not an option. Perhaps this could be because they live in rented property. For these people an invisible dog fence is the best option. An invisible dog fence works by burying a wire underground that can transmit a radio signal. This radio signal is picked up by an invisible dog fence receiver around the dog`s collar. When the dog tries to wander beyond t...

Electric Fence - Electric Fence
...t an Electric Fence would seem to be a fairly harsh way to keep cattle from straying into other fields but it is actually a fairly painless way of telling livestock to stay put. An Electric Fence has been used to control animals for numerous years ever since the first examples were used way back in the 1930s. Installing an Electric Fence can save money for farmers compared to more rigid types of fencing that can prove to be rather expensive in larger fields. By installing an Electric Fence farmers can have effective means of controlling their livestock without having to upkeep and repair damaged fence panels. One of the problems with an Electric Fence is that the power might sometimes be interrupted causing the fence to fail but in general they tend to work very effectively. After an animal has touched the Electric Fence they will receive a shock and they tend to ...
